How the data works
Google Trends collection
Topics come from Google Trends Trending Now. We collect the 10 report countries about every 15 minutes and 34 more countries about every hour, and keep every observation, so each topic has its own time-stamped history. Volumes are Google’s approximate lower bounds; growth compares with Google’s baseline. Search interest does not predict results.
Newspaper coverage
We read 444 vetted newspaper feeds in full text, classify each article by subject country and topic, and match articles to search topics. A match is shown only when it is verified; publisher location never decides an article’s subject.
Honest timestamps
Every page shows when its data was collected, in a labelled time zone. Collection time is not article publication time. First observed means first seen by our collector, not where a story began.
Glossary
- Attention gap
- How far search interest runs ahead of news coverage for a storyline, from -1 to 1. It is the storyline's search index (log search volume relative to the country's top storyline) minus its coverage index (log of distinct verified publishers, complete at 10 publishers). A high positive gap means many people are searching while few publishers have covered it.
- Search-led
- A storyline whose Google Trends search interest started at least 30 minutes (two collection cycles) before the first verified newspaper article we hold. Search-led minutes is the time between the two.
- Under-covered
- A storyline with an attention gap of at least 0.35, strong search interest, and fewer than three publishers covering it, counting both verified matches and headline mentions.
- Emerging (search-first)
- A storyline that started in the last 24 hours, was searched before any coverage, is not falling, and has fewer than three publishers so far.
- Verified record
- One development in a report (for example a funding round or a bill), with each field backed by an exact quote from a cited source and checked by an independent AI reviewer. Unsupported fields are shown as Not reported.
- Report pack
- A ready-made report type with its own rules, record fields and analysis outline: Business & Markets, National Investment, Political & Policy, Technology & AI, Sports and Media Monitor.
